ADA- American Dietetic Association Changes Name

eatright.org ADA American Dietetic Association Changes NameNews Flash:

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) will be officially changing it’s name to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as of January 1st, 2012. The announcement was made at the annual Food and Nutrition Conference and EXPO (FNCE) in September in San Diego, Ca.

For years, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals has been confused with the American Dental Association, American Diabetes Association, American Disability Association and even Americans for Democratic Action.

Personally, I am thrilled with the new name of our organization.  Academy is defined as a “society of learned persons organized to advance art, science, or literature” which couldn’t better describe the scientific background of Registered Dietitians.  Obviously, branding with the acronym: ADA didn’t exactly scream Nutrition Science.  And in a world where branding is critical to success, I think this was a well calculated intelligent move.

The organization’s website: www.EatRight.org has done a great job with providing a consistent brand, message and image.  I believe the website will remain the same.

  • Interesting! I had never thought about it but I guess it makes sense. Either way, they have their work cut out for them. The incidence of diabetes is rising and it’s hard to see kids younger and younger being afflicted with it. I so wish we could get the crap food out of our schools and homes. Thanks for keeping on keeping on!

    • I was actually at our school’s Home and School Assoc. meeting tonight. The topic of “awful cafeteria” food came up. I’m not sure what the answer is or how to get schools to change what they are serving! I volunteered at school the other day and had lunch with some students. The flat petrified chicken nuggets were pathetic.

I sat and mostly just listened tonight. They did mention they may pilot a Nutrition program in a couple of schools-of course the cost would be greater than $2.00/student. We’ll see. My first grader only brings her lunch.
