Eat Local in Your Neighborhood

Submitted by

butterhead lettuce 224x300 Eat Local in Your NeighborhoodI have recently been on a mission to buy and eat more local food.  Originally, my mission was to eat loads of vegetables from my own garden, but between working full time, 3 kids and my other ventures,  somehow my garden has sadly erupted into a large patch of lush and thriving weeds!

I did have lettuce for a few weeks, some tomatoes and beans and I think somewhere out there- there are a few cucumbers and peppers hiding for me to pick.  Maybe next year, my dream garden will come to fruition.

So for this year, I have been having a great time stopping at the local farms and enjoying the variety ofsummer crops of vegetables.  It’s not only better for our bodies and the environment to shop local, but also great for the local economy.

And while not all farms are certified “organic,” many of the local farmers do not use harmful pesticides like some of the large farms that ship fruits and vegetables in to the large super-market chains.

Thankfully, I live in Bucks County, Pa (My happy bubble just outside Philadelphia.)  It’s just an amazing place to live and easy place to shop local, loaded with local farm markets around every corner, especially this time of the year.  But no matter where you live, you will find local food if you seek it out and take an extra minute to do the research.

One of my favorite farms is Maximuck’s…In fact, I just submitted the below article to site called Eat Local Philly- which is a site with tons of information on places to shop and visit in the entire Philadelphia area.

So Maximucks….why is it one of my favorite farmer’s markets?

maximucks Mile 224x300 Eat Local in Your Neighborhood“Talk about an eco-friendly farm! Maximuck’s Farm Market in Doylestown (Bucks County) Pa is run entirely (100%) on solar energy.  The solar panels are truly impressive to see.

In 2009, the owner Matthew Maximuck also built their first hydroponic greenhouse.  With the Deer population and all of the building going on in the area, he knew he would have to employ some new farming methods to remain a sustainable farm in the area.

In that greenhouse, they grow the most amazing hydroponic butterhead lettuce.  It is truly the most perfect and delicious lettuce I have ever tasted.  It’s perfectly delicate and awesome for making lettuce wraps.  This fall & winter they will be opening an additional green house for growing hydroponic lettuce and tomatoes.  I can’t wait to taste them.

My other favorite thing about Maximuck’s is their Milk.  It comes in old-fashioned glass bottles.  The Chocolate Milk is their specialty- it’s creamy, rich and sinful.  And when you’re done your milk, you simply return the bottles and get a refund on your next milk purchase.

In addition to my favorite things listed above, you’ll also find plants, sweet potatoes, old-school candies, tomatoes, peaches, etc.  Maximuck’s is one of my favorite places to buy local in the Bucks County area!”

I submitted this article in disguise to Eat Local Philly wearing a milk mustache (chocolate)  after I checking in on Foursquare as the mayor of Maximuck’s Farm Market.  Giving the Skinny on Nutrition and local food in Bucks County Farm is always a blast!”
