Flooding and Well Water Safety

Submitted by

waterglass 150x150 Flooding and Well Water SafetyWe just got home from our week long trip to Disney.   {I promise I will post some good stuff, tips and the scoop on Disney and the food on the Disney Dining Plan.}  But first, I must grudgingly tell you about a more important public health topic.

When we got home on Saturday night, I opened the mail and got some negative results on our well water test which we had done after all of the recent flooding.  AND our water is contaminated with e-coli bacteria.

After hurricane Irene a friend of mine, who also has a well vs. public water, suggested we get our water tested because her water was contaminated from all of the flooding.  I thought, “is this really necessary?”  I mean I had the water fully tested for all contaminants and carcinogens when we moved into the house 4 years ago and annually we check the bacteria level.  And we have public sewer not septic so I was sure our water would be fine.  WRONG…
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that well water is tested every year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH levels.  AND you should test your well water after any flooding in your area which can change water table levels.  Apparently, even if a home 2 miles away has a leaky septic, it can get into your water.  With all of the rain in the Northeast these past few weeks, it seems that our wet basements are not the only thing we should be concerned about.

So now it looks like we have to shock our well with Chlorine and have it retested.  And I think we’ll be looking into getting some sort of water filtration system.

For more information on Well Water and how to have your Well tested call your public health department.  Testing our well was free because of the flooding we had.  It’s $20 to have it tested in Bucks County, PA without a flood.  There are also many private companies that will test for an array of different particles in your water.

What a pain in the patootie to say the least.

Now What?  Stay tuned….
