Hunger Crisis in Somalia- How to Help.

A nasty bug has hit our home hard.  All three of my kids have Strep throat.  I’ve  been to the Dr. and CVS 3x in the last 24 hours.  Tonight, after giving my 3 little sickies their evening round of Augmentin AND Motrin to my two littlest who still have bad sore throats & fevers, I turned on CNN to watch one of my favorite news sources Anderson Cooper who was reporting on the famine in Africa (video below.)

Suddenly that feeling of exhaustion that I originally flopped on my bed with went instantly away.  My brain that was thinking, “This SUCKS- sick kids in the summer!” was suddenly thinking, “Thank God for my home, running water, food on the table, and a caring Dr. and medicine.”   I suddenly started to feel thankful for everything in my life and those things that typically bug me like dinner dishes still in the sink just don’t matter.

Somalia Child Hunger Crisis in Somalia How to Help.Tonight’s coverage of the hunger crisis in Somalia was/is absolutely heartbreaking.  There are 3.2 million people in immediate need of Nutrition.

600,000 kids are on the brink of starvation.

29,000 kids have already sadly died.

It’s devastating to see… Kids 6 months old weighing only 6 pounds.  Mothers walk for two weeks just to get their children some help in crowded refugee camps.

One in five kids won’t make the trip.

However, once a child is treated for dehydration and can maintain fluids, there is a miracle peanut butter paste product called Plumpy’nut made especially for treating severe malnutrition.  Peanuts, the base of this product,  contain monounsaturated fats, which are easy to digest.  This paste is fortified with a balance micro and macro nutrients that can make the difference between life and death for a child.

So I was thinking, what can we do?

Can we give something up in our bountiful lives to help these children?  Americans spend tons of money on No Calorie products- how ironic when people NEED calories in other countries to survive.

How much money do you spend on diet soda (no calories, no Nutritional Value?)   Plumpy’nut costs about $1 a packet.  Diet Soda or bottled water costs about $1.00- or less.

It is reported that the relief workers in Africa with the United Nations will be out of supplies to help these children and families who are fighting for their lives.  $10.00 can feed a child for 10 days.  Can you help Save a Child?

My Prayers tonight:
“Please help and bless the children in Africa get to the medical care they need and fill their bellies with Plumpy’nut.  Thank you God that my kids are snuggled in their comfy beds dreaming of the ice cream cones they had after dinner which made their throats feel better.”

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:37
