Hunger Doesn’t Just Exist In Third World Countries.

childandcereal Hunger Doesnt Just Exist In Third World Countries. The other day I was watching Good Morning America and was reminded of the hunger crisis in this country.  There were school children describing how it “hurts” to be hungry.

Many of us may only think about people going hungry in this country around the holidays when your church or school is collecting canned goods and non-perishables. Many of us have been lucky and have never had to worry about putting food on our children’s plates. And others struggle.

Did you know that more than 36 million Americans go to bed hungry every night and 12 million of them are children? And while I hate to harp on the “horrible state of the economy” or large un-employment rates, I can’t imagine the situation is getting any better quickly. Check out these statistics!

In fact, 10% of people in Pennsylvania suffer from food insecurity (which is non knowing when or what your next meal will be) This rate is higher than New Jersey (7.7%), Delaware (7.8%), Maryland (9.5%), Connecticut (8.6%) and New York (9.8%). The saddest part about this is the consequences from being hungry. Kids can have weakened immune systems, cognitive and behavioral problems, be tired and so many teenagers suffer from depression. I mean wouldn’t you be depressed if you didn’t know when/where your next meal would come from? The craziest part is we found out that just a $1 donation can purchase 10 pounds of food from a food bank.

ShopRite+ +Partners+In+Caring Hunger Doesnt Just Exist In Third World Countries.

Last year, I was invited to participate in the Bloggers in Caring Program by ShopRite Partners in Caring & General Mills. This program called “Blog It Forward To Fight Hunger” is to help spread the word to others about the hunger crisis in this country. ShopRite Partners in Caring program currently supports 23 regional food banks and more than 1400 other charitable agencies with food or meal components. They saw that there was a problem right in their own neighborhoods and decided to do something about it. They have been helping to fight the hunger for over 20 years through support of Feeding America network (formerly American’s Second Harvest) and through the Checkout Hunger program, but in 1999 they started their own program and have now donated more than $20 million dollars in the fight against hunger. They have successfully had help from over 50 companies (including General Mills) to help feed families in need.

They asked me to become “Hunger-fighting Heroes.” And who hasn’t dreamed at some time of being a super-hero, especially for a cause as great as this one? By being a partner in this program, General Mills donated 1 Box of cereal to a food bank in ShopRite’s trading area for comments posted. Yes, that’s 30 boxes of cereal that I was able to help give.
