Hurricane Irene On Her Way

While I was away, my family felt the tremors from the Virginia earthquake and now….A Big Girl Hurricane named Irene is on her way up the coast.   I actually raced her here as I was in a meeting in Atlanta, Georgia all week.

My plane landed late Thursday night after several delays, but thank God I got home and that I had a window seat (so no nobody was bumping me) and it was Exit row (Can I hear a Woot Woot! for the Delta check in girl who hooked me up?)  I was next to the door of the plane and was even the first one off when we landed.)

My plane neighbor was some nice guy from New Orleans and couldn’t believe he was headed into Hurricane-ville after all he had seen with hurricane Katrina a few years back.  He was nice, but not too chatty so I even got to complete a free CPU on my way home about Soy/Isoflavones and their connection with cancer prevention.  Gotta love having WIFI while in the air.

I was hanging out in my kids’ tree-house until about an hour ago and now the winds and rain are starting to kick in here. Here is what we did today to prep and be safe for the hurricane (because we always lose our electric):

  1. Got more bottled water.  We have a Well so when the power goes, we have none.
  2. Stocked up on milk, food, etc. for the weekend
  3. Son got back to school hair-cut
  4. Got more propane for the Grill so we can cook (our stove is electric).
  5. Charged all batteries i.e. Cell Phones, laptops, etc. -laptop with a DVD player ready if power is out and kids are getting rammy!
  6. Got a new battery for the Sump Pump and Filled with new battery acid (Husband did this chore…hope it works)
  7. Favorite Tip I got from twitter- make extra coffee so you can at least have iced coffee in the morning if power is out.
  8. Husband Took our Gazebo canopy down so it doesn’t rip (I think he hates me for making him do this, but it’s brand new!)
  9. All flashlights and candles are ready to go.
  10. Cars are full of gas.
  11. And we are about to fill our bathtub up with extra water so we can flush our potties if we lose electric.

Off to visit with some good friends and their new puppies who had to evacuate their beach house (LBI, New Jersey) And Yum…can’t wait for a Hurricane happy hour and cooking on the grill in the rain!
