Project Runway- Brother Sewing Machine

Submitted by

Just picked up my new sewing machine- thanks Mom! My Mom just surprised me with this awesome Girl. This is the first time I have been surprised in a LONG….time!  It’s not my Birthday, it’s not my Anniversary & it’s not a late Christmas gift.  Ironically, it’s my Mom’s birthday so the last thing I expected to get was this awesome gift from her today!

Here is how she surprised me- great story because I am such a snooper, peeker, private eye investigator that nobody can usually ever surprise me.  I actually cried when I got the machine, my new BFF and she is BEAUTIFUL!

So Mom… just popped in this afternoon to come see the kids, of which two are sick.  She said she thought she would just come up and give me a break to see if I wanted to run down to Byrnes Sewing Center (a place I’ve been to once.)  Mom said she was just by there in the morning and saw the cutest Sit-Upon, which is a project I’m working on with my Daisy Girl Scout Troop.  {If you don’t know what a Sit Upon is, it’s a little cushy Matt for each girl to sit on around campfires.}

Mom is helping at the Girl Scout meeting next week, which happens to be on her birthday.  I’m not sure if helping eleven Kindergarten and 1st graders on your birthday would be much fun for most people, but my Mom is an avid sewer, quilter, crafter, could have been Martha kind of lady AND loves to help with these kind of projects.

She was also helping because she has three sewing machines and I had NONE.  Well, I did have an old hand me down machine from the 1970s that my Mom gave me years back.  But that old girl machine was not going to work!  She was so hard to use and stressed me out anytime I had to thread her bobbin.  I have nightmares about making curtains for my apartment in Grad School & fighting with my Mom because I was so frustrated and had to get her to help me thread it and make new bobbins.

I guess you could say that OLD sewing machine and I had a love/hate relationship.  I put her in the basement closet a few years ago after our last fight.  I did bring her out of the basement last week to see if she wanted to help with the sit-upons.  She looked absolutely fine, the same as it did when I put it in there 4 years ago BUT when I opened her case up, she was a rusty & MOLDY Mess.  Maybe she was crying… But I really think Hurricane Irene was responsible for her condition.  Anyway, that old girl sewing machine was put out of her misery.

On with the story…..

Mom insisted this afternoon that it was great for me to get out of the house for a bit.   She wanted me to go look at the “sit-upon” at the sewing shop to see if I liked the way it was done so she could get started working on them.  My Mom gets way into projects like this so I totally bought her story.

So, I got my keys and headed out, kid free might I add,  for a few moments to go take a look at the sample Sit-Upon.  When I got to the sewing center I was to ask Ginny to get the Sit Upon to show me.

Ginny greets me with a super happy,
“Hi! Did you say Sit-Upon?”
“Oh, I just talked to your Mom this morning!”

DivaMachine 300x224 Project Runway Brother Sewing MachineShe then took me over to a beautiful NEW and PINK sewing Machine & said, “Here is your Sit-Upon!”
“Your Mom got you a new machine and said I had to teach you how to use it before you left!”

I cried (literally) and said, “And it’s Pink!”
Ginny said, “Oh your Mom knew you would especially LOVE it because it’s PINK!”

Ginny continued to tell me all about how my Mom called right before I got there to tell her that her daughter was wearing a black trench coat and was on her way and to remember “sit-upon.”  She was joking that the code word in the shop was “Sit-Upon” and was giggling after my Mom called and said “trench coat.”

By the way, my trench coat was my only way of feeling stylish on a day home with two sick kids!

I then got my mini sewing machine tutorial.  This machine is SUPER Easy to thread, make bobbins, button holes (Yes, AMAZING) and has a two needle at once option.  The front of the machine has a smooth dial to change the stitches (seriously like the one on my Advantium Microwave oven) and the feet just pop off and on when you need to change them for different stitches- very cool.  It’s truly a machine any DIY Diva would LOVE!  I’ve only used it a little bit this evening to practice with it, but so far I love her!  And Yes I can sew icon smile Project Runway Brother Sewing Machine  I remember how and it was just like getting back on your bike after a long winter.  The sewing center does offer free classes with the machine to learn how to use it even better.  I think I’ll take them up on that for sure.

After my lesson, Ginny pulled a brand new machine from behind the counter for me AND seriously when I saw the high heel shoes on the Project Runway Limited Edition Brother machine BOX, I teared up again.   This machine and I are meant to be.  AND my Mom is so Cool!

Project Runway here I come…

Thank you Mom- You’re the best!  I love you.
