Quick and Healthy Dinner Ideas For Kids.

Submitted by

One thing we can all use in our busy lives are some quick dinner ideas, especially on those nights when we are running the kids around to various activities.

A misconception that many women have is that we have to feed our kids a hot cooked meal every-night.  And after a busy day when we can’t get our acts together to make a homemade meal, many moms stop for fast food, which isn’t usually the healthiest option.

Here are a few dinner ideas to keep your kids eating healthy (and you sane) every night- even when you don’t have time to “cook” a traditional hot meal.

  • Annie’s organic bunny or peace pasta just takes 12 minutes to make 217321 Quick and Healthy Dinner Ideas For Kids.and feeds two kids (three if their small.)  Annie’s also makes an organic pasta in quick and easy single serve packets- 3 minutes in the microwave and it’s done!  Yes, 3 minutes…a Mommy and hungry kid’s dream!
  • Green giant frozen vegetables take 3 minutes in the microwave, are low fat and loaded with vitamins. Broccoli with cheese sauce is our favorite (regular cheese- not “zesty” – check the package) and also “Healthy Weight”…soy beans, pea pods, carrots…
  • Barilla makes a Barilla plus pasta that has more protein and nutrients. This is especially great for those kids who won’t eat meat.  Wegman’s also makes a Super Pasta that is awesome.
  • Here is an excellent site for some quick recipes for your family and picky eaters: www.familyfun.go.com
  • Carnation Instant Breakfast is also loaded with vitamins and minerals for kids. The vanilla flavor can be incorporated into a smoothie with bananas and frozen strawberries for an even more nutritious shake. This is great for dessert or as a main meal component for that picky eater. Let your kids add the strawberries and bananas to the blender. *Kids who help prepare their food, are more likely to eat/drink it. This works also for a quick and easy breakfast.
  • Orange Yogurt: My daughters favorite…Add pureed baby carrots to vanilla or banana yogurt and even let them put a few ice-cream sprinkles on top!  Put some whole wheat crackers on the side or some whole wheat bread with a little bit of Nutella.
  • Rotisserie chicken picked up from your local grocery store is also a rotisserie chicken 300x207 Quick and Healthy Dinner Ideas For Kids.great option and healthier than chicken Nuggets or frozen chicken strips.  Serve with a baked potato topped with broccoli and a low-fat cheese.
  • Pizza night- tomatoes/Cheese and another vegetable on top (if your kids will have it).  If not, serve carrot sticks/celery/snow peas on the side with the option to dip in a low fat ranch dressing is a great way to up your vegetable servings.
  • If you are a good planner, Crock pots can be started in the morning so dinner is ready for you and the kids when you get home.
  • For adult conversation with your spouse during dinner, occasionally try feeding the kids first and then give them an activity or game to do while the two of you eat.  Maybe even allow a ½ hour of tv while your at the dinner table uninterrupted by, “Mommy can I have?” or “Mommy, can you get me…”
  • I know the research shows that you should not let your children eat in front of the TV.  I often give my kids fruits & veggies to nibble on while I make the rest of their dinner.  There is nothing wrong with your kids filling up on a healthy snack like carrot sticks or apples!  And if they eat their veggies first, you don’t have to battle them eating them at the table.

Remember, research says that it takes a child 19 times to adopt a new food! All you can do is offer healthy options and let them adopt the foods at their own pace.”
