Sugar Shout Out to My Daisy Girl Scouts & This Cookie Recipe

hanukah and christmas cookies Sugar Shout Out to My Daisy Girl Scouts & This Cookie RecipeNow that I am a “Work At Home Mom,” I find myself volunteering for a lot of things.  Being a Girl Scout leader is absolutely the most fun volunteer job that I have taken on, at least so far.  I say this because I don’t really enjoy camping.  And we haven’t camped yet!  I do enjoy the activities that go with camping like:  campfires, roasting marshmallows and hiking.  The thought of sleeping in a tent with bugs- the horror.

My mother actually laughed when I told her I was going to be a Daisy Troop Leader.  She said, “Um, Did you tell them you don’t like to camp?”  Then continued on with, “I remember when you were a Girl Scout…” AND “Do you remember that time you came home from that trip covered in Poison Ivy?  You looked like a burn victim!” {Yes, I really did}

“There is a lot more to being a Girl Scout than camping, Mom.”

Girl Scouts is about being kind, helping others, being a good friend, manners & learning how to be a self confident leader in this world of ours.  And as far as the crafts, baking, organizing volunteer activities (like Christmas caroling) and meeting planning- I LOVE it all.  I do have my Mom, who could give Martha Stewart a run for her money, to thank for these skills.

Cole and the dough1 e1322741056481 Sugar Shout Out to My Daisy Girl Scouts & This Cookie RecipeLast night, we got together for our first December meeting (and second meeting ever) to enjoy some holiday fun.   My son and I made these Christmas, Hanukkah & Dinosaur cookies yesterday after his morning Kindergarten (over at 11:10!)  And since he doesn’t come to the Girl Scouts meetings, I have him help me do all of the fun prep work which he loves.

My troop has 8 First Graders and 3 Kindergarteners.  Each meeting is actually like planning a mini birthday party.  I’m finding that with 11 girls, it’s important to keep them busy so they don’t run (literally) around my house! {Lesson Learned at my First Daisy Meeting}  Here is the skinny on how last night’s Daisy meeting went down….(CLICK  below & you’ll also FIND MY COOKIE RECIPE)

After doing our Girl Scout Pledge, I split the girls in two groups (traditional counting method- odd and even numbers.)  One group got to decorate Christmas cookies and Jewish Stars in my kitchen.  And the other group played Dreidel games and learned about Chanukah with one of my Mom helpers in the other room.  Half way through the night, we switched groups so each girl could enjoy all of the festivities and of course eat cookies and win Chocolate Gemmel!
Cookies e1322740594819 Sugar Shout Out to My Daisy Girl Scouts & This Cookie RecipeAt the end of the night we played Freeze Dance in my living room to Holiday Music (which actually started out with Dynamite by Tao Cruz.  Yep, I couldn’t find my Christmas Tunes!)    When my iPad switched over to House of Pain- Jump Around, I got flashbacks of frat parties at Penn State.  And visions of 11 girls Jumping Around….Do I need to say more.

So, God Forbid some inappropriate song would come on that iPad of mine next.  Solution: I quickly turned to Pandora Radio- channel search “Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas” where I got a great selection of Christmas music!

Here is a Sugar Shout Out for the Rolled Sugar Cookie Recipe that I have been using for years.  I have tried many and this is hands down the BEST!
Making sugar cookies is a labor of love, but a lot of work.   I cut out and baked the cookies a head of time and then the girls decorated them with icing and sprinkles- a blast.

    I’m so proud of you for stepping up and becoming a leader! I started out 11 years ago as a Daisy leader, and never regretted it. I’ve had so many quality experiences with my daughter and her friends (now like surrogate daughters) that I’d never have had the opportunity to without Scouts. Moms like you grow strong, smart girls for all of us! Just found your blog from a facebook post, am looking forward to reading more. Keep on, Sister Scout!
